Disability is not inability, they say. From the quote itself, it is clear that persons with disability can still lead an independent life if assisted/empowered and given a chance and opportunity regardless of their disability or limitation.
Disability issues have been a world wide concern, let alone nationwide, whereby different developmental organizations formulate various programs to address the plight of persons with disabilities. However, not much has been achieved in dealing with problems facing disabled people, especially in Third world countries because there are many cases present in communities where little has been done on awareness creation, resulting to the negative attitude towards persons with disabilities. In most cases children with disabilities are being hidden or held captives in their homes, hence denying them their human rights. In the year 2003, the Government of Kenya enacted Disability Act 2003 which serves as the first legal document to address issues of Disability. Part of the document has been operationalized for instance the formation a National Council for Persons with Disabilities However, the pace at which the operation of the Council is going, is below the expectations of people with disabilities otherwise the Act provides a legal framework where persons with disabilities can base their argument as they pursue their agenda
In the light of the above, this centre was started through the co-operation of the community members especially parents / guardians of children with disabilities who had acquired awareness creation skills from the founder of the centre. They held several consultation meetings and eventually they came up with a centre to cater for the social, spiritual, physical and occupational needs for the children.
Hope and Faith Centre for the Disabled is a centre established in 2004 and is registered under the Ministry of Gender, Sport and culture and Social Services and registered with children department.
The centre caters for children with various types of disabilities such as
Physically Handicapped, Intellectual Discouraged such as cerebral palsy, Mental
and Epileptic and multiple handicapped children.
The centre is catering for children with special needs although the demand
for the services is increasing day by day due to the awareness created despite
the fact that the resources cannot accommodate more.
